I just installed ClickToFlash (http://rentzsch.github.com/clicktoflash/) on all my Macs and my browsing experience has dramatically increased 1000% for the better. No more intrusive pop-up ads, distracting animations, and more importantly, long-loading, resource-intensive, useless, gimmicky intros and gadgets... unless I specifically ask for it.

I can only imagine what would happen if Flash apps on the iPhone didn't have such an ability to be optionally downloaded, let alone execute upon it loading. It's bad enough that AT&T's bandwidth is horrendous at times, I don't need to waste half a megabyte just downloading an advertisement.

    +1
ClickToFlash is Awesome. My computer runs so much cooler now that I've installed it.

I'm curious to know whether these Top Secret features have been excluded from the developer preview as well........

Would they purposefully give developers a beta with striped down features?

And if the point of not publicly releasing them is that they dont want Microsoft to copy the features but they DO include those features in the developer preview, I have to imagine that Microsoft will see those features as I assume it is an official Apple developer and would receive these materials!

I'm not sure about novels but I would love to be able to read articles from Time, Wired, New Yorker et cetera on my iPod. In the past I've copied them from the web and transferred them into a 'note' file for viewing on my iPod. However I'd love to be able to download them from iTunes like a podcast. 99 cents wouldn't be un-reasonable if it's a well written article and it's advertisement free.

In response to 63dot, it looks like there was a reproduction.

Now, I wonder if part of the iTunes deal involves "Yesterday and Today" and if a digital version of the cover would be included?

It's a usb wireless card, I presume. He holds it up, flicks out the (usb) connector and plugs it into the left side of the Macbook. While he sticks in the card he says: "...we're using 3rd party hardware..."

I hope you're not referring to me when you say "people are so quick to call this an unfair attack on Apple".
Not referring to you at all, Gekko. You're adding the kind of informed discussion I look forward to here. And thanks for helping the "blind" and cluing me in on what was going on.

I'm finally out from behind the firewall and watched the video, which I have to say is very well done.

The title of the demo is "Device Drivers: Don't build a house on shaky ground." They are drawing attention to a serious problem and most people here are missing the point because all the blood rushed to their heads when they saw the Mac logo.

They clearly say this is not Apple's problem, it's because of buggy code in a 3rd party driver. They're using the Mac for a reason here-- they are specifically making the point that it doesn't matter how much trust you put into your OS vendor, you can get hosed by any poorly made USB thingy that you stick in the side.

Take that home with you-- Apple may have a more secure OS but all of that can go out the window with a bad peripheral. This could just as easily have been a video camera that had a malicious file loaded onto it and a bad driver. Or, it could have been a printer with a bad print driver and a bad Bluetooth implementation that let an attacker pass through the printer into your machine.

They didn't run this demo live because they didn't want anyone in the audience to sniff the traffic and release it into the wild. Very responsible to the verge of being paranoid.

If there is a problem here it with the Washington Post who didn't clearly explain the problem. Maybe they didn't understand it themselves...

Drivers are an achilles heel of any OS. They give direct access to the kernel and bypass any security the OS can try to provide. They almost have to do that if you're going to allow 3rd party hardware to work with the machine. It was also a poorly written driver that allowed the DVD encryption to be cracked-- the vendor left the keychain available in plaintext.

This is a very difficult problem to solve. MS has talked about only allowing "signed drivers" to be run-- meaning that MS has to approve anything before it's loaded and that caused a developer outcry because it made MS the gatekeeper of all new hardware.

One way to minimize the exposure is to rely on a small number of standard interfaces. Less interfaces mean less points of entry that need to be tested. Apple does this very well-- almost out of necessity. Ever notice how every new piece of hardware comes with a disc you need to install under Windows but just seems to work with your Mac? It's because Apple connects through a standard interface (say, Mass Storage, or Digital Camera) and the vendor tries to get fancy for Windows and roll their own. They do it for windows because they think it's worth the effort to "differentiate" themselves in that crowded market while Mac users can see that those bells or whistles aren't necessary.

The point of the video is to show that the bells and whistles can also be dangerous.

Apple's website was thick with Flash and frames when the iPhone was first announced. It was the "real internet".

Steve Jobs deliberately stayed away from displaying the Apple website on an iPhone for months... because Safari couldn't display it correctly, if at all.

At the time, I noted online what he was doing, and commented that Apple was going to have to totally redesign their website before the iPhone went on sale.

    And so they did.

Apple never used flash for anything more than simple animated ads on their site! And moved away from that to Quicktime based video. If you were seeing Flash it was because you were on a PC with out quicktime and the Apple site was falling back to flash!

Flash is evil it is not searchable, it is a black stain on the open web!

Don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying we need religion to raise children, but we better have a moral code of some kind to replace it with.

The overwhelming majority of humans are born with a built in 'code' already. It's something called 'empathy'.

I'm sure this is correct. AFAIK, this thread is about the UK, though.

I don't want to drag this too far OT, but my arguments are germane for two reasons. First, the history of the black population in London will be just as critical in understanding the relationship between race and crime there as it is in the US (where I am more familiar with the issue). Power relationships, socioeconomic status, prejudice, media slant - these are all major factors in the way people percieve issues and the way they go about trying to understand and solve them. We need more data on the London situation before any judgments can be made.

Second, likemyorbs's OP demonstrates his bias: [emphasis mine]

Just read an article that says black men in London commit more than half of street crimes and gun crimes. They make up only 12% of londons population. These statistics are even higher than in the US and they can't blame slavery and Jim crow laws in London like they love to do here. What is the possible reasoning behind this? Very interesting.

He is approaching the issue from the perspective that xeonophobia, racism and/or prejudice have little or no effect on a minority population in terms of their self identity, educational/economic/professional opportunities, or the nature of their relationship with the majority group. This could not be further from the truth.

So again with the boohoo sob stories of past discrimination that young blacks today have never felt

Why do rural whites in the south fly confederate flags, reenact battles and develop spurious revisionist theories about the Civil War? Why do they care? They never felt any of its effect, right?

They are put at an advantage over whites today and have been for the last 40 years.

Funny, the numbers don't bear that out. I have never seen a single piece of data that would indicate that blacks have any sort of advantage over whites, or even parity for that matter, in terms of education, income, or any other metric.

And once again, you say nothing about other countries that have the same issue and no racial history like the US has, i've already asked you twice to acknowledge this and look at it in a more global way, and you keep mentioning slavery and jim crow laws which affected a tiny percentage of africans worldwide a long time ago. stop thinking only within the borders of the US.

Whereas you'd prefer to prattle on about trailer parks...in the US. Fine, let's talk other countries - but what on earth is a racial history? I challenge you to find a single country with a significant black population that has no history of prejudice.

Not only do they commit a disproportionate amount of the crime in mostly white countries

Moving the goalposts again once you're proven wrong...you aren't fooling anyone.

they can't even seem to run their own countries in Africa without violence. WHY????

In a word, colonialism. Again, read some history. It has nothing to do with them being black.

Quit it with the politically correct "the white man is bringing the black race down" BS and look at it realistically.

My primary basis for debate is fact. Yours is uncited assertion, accusation and "common knowledge" without any basis in fact. You are hiding behind weasel-words. This is not political correctness, it's reality. I am not trying to assert that any population carries no responsibility for its own behavior - but your apparent ignoroance or dismissal of absolutely critical contextual information makes your opinion fairly worthless in my eyes. How can you hope to understand anything in today's world if you dismiss the events and mechanisms that created it, or selectively ignore facts that disprove your baseless assertions?

"Randy Ubillos, who did the demo, added more features ..."

Great, That's the guy who "redesigned" iMovie and screwed it up. I'll bet he was partially responsible for the "improved" (sic) iPhoto 11 as well.

I'll reserve judgement until this hits the streets.

Wow, we went a whole hour without this old one popping up again. I feel embarrassed for you.

More likely editing houses will be angry because of the new price point... $299 is much more affordable and makes rental booths seem unnecessary for many productions. Of course there will still be much more intense productions that will keep them in business for a while still.

I don't know, to me Final Cut Suite was always a steal. The 'revolution' started over 10 years ago. Unfortunately, broadcasters still require HDCAM/SR deliveries so rentals aren't necessarily a thing of the past yet. I can't wait for the day we can just deliver a quicktime file.

They banned songs like Lucy in the Sky and Ticket to Ride... (not to mention Metallica's Seek and Destroy) because the songs reminded people of the event.

Time for Apple to learn what a patch is. Best example of patching desperately being needed is Xcode which requires the whole 4.25gb app to be downloaded every single time they update. They could change 1 line of code and you need to download 4.25gb. That's just bad design.

Well, that is every online game, if we're being honest. Doesn't matter what you play, there are going to be people out there who just want to ruin the experience for others. It sucks, but it is the sad reality of the online world these days. The Halo community, in my opinion, is quite good and friendly, but it doesn't take but a very small group of individuals to ruin it. My only suggestion is to play with as many friends or nice players that you know. I have a handful of real-life friends who play Halo, but I also won't hesitate to add someone who I enjoyed playing with.

I used to play a TON of Rocket Race in Halo 3. It was a crazy fun gametype, but it was also very easy to ruin for everyone, if you were that kind of person. So, I just started adding people to my friends list every chance I got when I had fun playing with people. Pretty soon, I had tons of people online who I could play with. We would fill up the lobby with actual, good players, thus ending any chance of griefing right from the start. I won't touch competitive Matchmaking any more unless I have enough people I know playing to fill up our team. Partly because of jerks, but mostly because it is just more fun when you have a team of people you know, and enjoy playing with.

Not to be an @$$ but I am so tired of that pat answer of "you just need to play with friends'. It's kind of like the answer you get when you call tech support after you spent days googling for the answer to your problem, and they start with "Did you try turning it on & off?" ;) I know they are just doing their job, but it's obviousness is still something you're tired of hearing.

Playing with friends is not always a constant option, sometimes you have to bite the proverbial bullet & play with randoms. I know for me, it is a necessity because I need to badly improve my skills. Have randoms tell me I suck is a no biggie, after all they don't say much when I own them. Letting your friends down cause you aren't that good does suck.

What also sucks, and I still stick with my call,is that the Halo community contains the largest number of @$$hats to ever discover a microphone. From the well documented You Tube video of random players verbally harassing a gay player before a match even starts. To the almost pathetic way some players are addicted to the 'N' word. To the now immortal play style of wanting to be the only player who gets the best weapon or vehicle, and are willing to kill teammates to get it.

Don't get me wrong, players use of the 'n' word isn't exclusive to Halo. I would say it was actually worse in Rainbow 6, but that's not the point. I believe that there's just something about Halo that brings out the worst in players. I'm reminded of the story of Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson the former UFC champ who won't play Halo online because of the crap on Halo. I used to play quite a bit of CoD MW2. When the Halo community as a whole thought the game was crap, it wasn't too bad. When they changed their mind, the game made it's hastier descent into the slums it's in now.

I know it is every game on every system that has more than it's share of @$$hats, that goes without saying. I just believe ( and from reading some of the comments on Kotaku about the recent 1 day bannings of some players for abusing farming in Reach ) that the Halo community has more than it's share of people who's manhood is defined by playing online from the relative safety of their bedroom.
