Alexandra Maria Lara: As Refreshing As a Gentle Spring Rain
If you find my blog on Alexandra Maria Lara (born Alexandra Plătăreanu) a bit limited, don't hold it against me; I am not to blame. The reason is that most of the information about the Romanian born German actress can be found written in German on German sites. And although, yours truly is multi-talented, I am not endowed with the ability of reading or speaking German. I recognize the language but am totally lost in any attempt to decipher it. So having put that out on the table, I will proceed.
Alexandra Maria Lara is a major movie star in Germany and has been playing major roles in television shows since the age of 16. She is the only child of Valentin Plătăreanu, a Bucharest actor and co-founder of the Theaterwerkstatt Charlottenburg and his wife Doina. The family fled to West Germany with the intention of eventually relocating to Canada when she was 4 and a half years old to escape Communist regime.
She has built up quite a prestigious career for herself and has become well known for being one of Germany's most accomplished leading ladies. Her movie/television portfolio is quite extensive and her roles fall primarily into the historical and crime genre.
Lara is widely known for such television and big screen films as Mensch Pia (1994), Die Bubi Scholz Story (1998), Vertrauen ist alles (2000), Crazy (2000), Honolulu (2001) and Nackt (2002). Two of her most noted films however are Der Tunnel (2001) for which she received critical acclaim for her performance and the Oscar Nominated 2004 film Der Untergang which is hailed as Lara's most famous role to date. She played the role of Adolf Hitler's secretary. This is a role that also earned her international recognition.
As a result she was solicited to perform in English speaking movies. These movies include Control, Youth Without Youth (it was due to her amazing performance in Der Untergang that Francis Ford Coppola contacted the actress and gave her a leading role in this movie), I Really Hate My Job and The City of Final Destination, all in 2007.
In 2008 the talented actress continued to make strides in a number of German films and also took on two more English roles - Miracle at St. Anna and the smash hit The Reader which is a drama/romance film based on the 1995 German novel of the same name by Bernhard Schlink. This filmed starred Kate Winslet, David Kross, Jeanette Hain and Ralph Fiennes and the screenplay was written by David Hare.
You can look forward to seeing the gorgeous 30 year old actress in her next English role playing Natalia Moldovan in City of Life which is currently being filmed. Fellow stars include Natalie Dormer, Jason Flemyng and Susan George.
To date, she has won a Babi Award for her role in Der Untergang (shared with her fellow co-stars, producer and director), a Golden Camera (Germany) Award for Best Actress, a Milan International Film Festival Award for Best Actress - Der Fischer und seine Frau and an Undine Award (Austria) for Best Young Comedian - Vom Suchen und Finden der Liebe.
In April 2005 she was ranked #1 by Bild (tabloid) on their "50 Most Beautiful Germans of Today" list. There's no disputing that Lara is dazzling, elegant, sumptuous and strikingly attractive. She has a beautiful smile and a very charming, alluring and seductive personality. She was a member of the jury at the Transylvanian File Festival in 2005 and the Cannes Film Festival in 2008.
